The green transition has made the steel industry rethink its processes and push for more sustainable and efficient solutions in production and application. There’s never been a more exciting time to join the industry – making it the perfect moment to consider, or perhaps reconsider for some, a career in steel.

Insights from our very own people

At Ovako, fresh talent can contribute to the green transition in a way that truly makes a difference. Here’s what some of our team members have to say about working in steel.

EVP HR Phetra Ericsson and Head of Research Patrik Ölund emphasize that Ovako’s size makes it a uniquely enjoyable place to work. “We’re big enough to be relevant in society but small enough that everyone can have their say and share ideas. Many at the company know each other well!”

Ericsson and Ölund note that we frequently use surveys to gather feedback on key issues to make sure important topics are addressed.

Quality and Technology Manager Mia Almcrantz and CFO Erik Bohman highlight exciting opportunities in process optimization at Ovako. We are also actively exploring the potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), creating even more prospects for job seekers, recent graduates, and specialists.

“There’s a sense of pride and heritage. People are respectful, skilled, and they love what they do,” says Bohman. “This impacts the entire work culture. It’s almost a part of the national identity, an important part of Sweden’s history.”

Making a difference

Innovations, such as our Hybrid Steel or the new hydrogen plant in Hofors that provides fuel for heating steel before rolling, are just some of the impactful initiatives we’ve taken recently. And the common thread is that they’ve come from brilliant minds within the company.

We aim to broaden our talent pool to bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions that will help drive sustainable growth across our business.

To attract the talent behind the next big idea, we’ve launched a new podcast that explores what it’s like to work in steel production and the career opportunities the industry offers.

We aim to raise awareness of Ovako, strengthen our appeal as an employer – especially in smaller towns – and build a sense of community among employees and customers to maintain engagement and loyalty. Our goal is to attract more people by showcasing our progress, what we do, and the exciting opportunities of working with us.
