Bringing the forging community together

In September, we had the privilege of hosting the EUROFORGE Autumn meeting at our Hofors mill in Sweden. It was a gathering of forging professionals from across nine different countries who came together over two days to explore the critical strategies the forging community is employing to combat carbon emissions.

Tobias Hain, Secretary General of EUROFORGE, introduced the organization's mission, emphasizing its role as the collective entity for European forging associations and companies. The face-to-face gatherings like this one were seen as a vital opportunity for the forging community to come together, and the exceptional turnout at Hofors was credited to the chance to witness Ovako's cutting-edge forging techniques and the newly established hydrogen facility.

A significant part of the meeting focused on industry expectations related to sustainability and carbon emissions. Rickard Qvarfort, President of Ovako BU Hofors-Hellefors, commenced the discussion by highlighting Ovako's commitment to carbon reduction. This was underlined by showing the Ovako position in a recent study about 27 global steel manufacturers. Not only does Ovako come out as the lowest emitter already today, but also the plan to further reduce an additional 80% in scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 2030 states the ambition to continue as the spear head in the steel industry.

To support the way forward for the forging community presentations covering automotive, industrial and mining perspective were held. There is a need expressed among the forging companies to better understand what demands on CO2 emissions in absolute figures are expected and what is the timeline for the different gates to pass. This will be crucial for investment measures to come in the forging industry.

SKF presented the sustainability requirements for their suppliers, aiming to decarbonize their operations by 2030 and achieve a net-zero supply chain by 2050.

Volvo AB presented their determination to be entirely fossil-free, emphasizing their goal of achieving a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions from a product cradle to gate perspective by 2040, especially regarding the importance of forged products in achieving this target.

Sandvik AB, examined sustainability from a mining equipment perspective, focusing on the electrification and use of renewable energy in creating net-zero mines of the future.

Tobias Hain concluded the session by noting the significant shift in the forging industry towards sustainability, highlighting the need for clear targets and collaboration along the supply chain to achieve their demanding carbon reduction goals.

The networking sessions provided an opportunity to hear from attendees about their reasons for joining the event. Underscored was the unity of forging companies in the quest for carbon reduction in response to societal demands.

On the second day, technical presentations and a factory tour took center stage

Delegates had, in the latter a chance to explore Ovako's groundbreaking fossil-free hydrogen plant and witness the forging and ring rolling facilities.

- Patrik Holm, Ovako Group Senior R&D Engineer, delved into the advantages of forging over rolling, introducing the innovative "best of both worlds" forged-rolled production flow.

- Patrik Ölund, Head of Ovako Group R&D, shared insights into forging steel production, covering various scrap-based metallurgical routes that offer flexibility in properties, dimensions, and quality.

- Me, Erik Claesson, Ovako Director, Automotive Segment and Business Intelligence, emphasized the need for global standards to define CO2 footprint in product specifications, favoring the "cradle to gate" approach. As we are all pro the mother-earth aspect, we simply need to work with absolute figures in a standardized manner.

In closing, Ovako as the primary host for EUROFORGE, highlighted three key takeaways: the availability of Near Zero Emission engineering steel in significant quantities, the measurability of CO2 emissions, and the importance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) based on cradle to gate figures. The event demonstrated the forging community's dedication to achieving carbon reduction targets that once seemed formidable, now calling for clear and precise targets from customers.

Please invite any of your colleagues/networks to join us as we look forward to bringing you news of interesting aspects of the steel business world.

We are also happy to receive questions and will do our very best to address them in upcoming newsletters.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we continue to shape the future of steel and redefine what's possible.

All the best,

Erik Claesson
