Introducing our new Young Professionals Network

As we approach year-end, we are looking to the future at Ovako with the launch of our Young Professionals Network. Customers rely on insight from our technical experts to gain a commercial edge. Because knowing who to ask is as powerful as having knowledge yourself, we are launching this initiative to help our people develop personal networks. It is also a key investment in our future ability to serve customers.

The network is also a chance for the participants to learn more about Ovako and their development possibilities. We will also be able to learn more about the career and development expectations of young professionals so that we can hone our people strategy.
We’ve recruited the first 20 members from people nominated by managers across the business. They’ve met at a kick-off event in Hofors in November, with four more meet-ups in the diary between now and March 2024. We plan to extend the network in the future years.

Sharing competence with our Japanese colleagues

Another area where we’re focusing on people development is a new Competence Exchange with our colleagues in Japan. As an international company, we want to find ways to encourage two-way sharing of knowledge, even though we are 8,000 km apart.
That’s why we’re establishing this Competence Exchange program with Sanyo Special Steel and Nippon Steel Corporation. Ovako employees in the Nordic region can get the opportunity to travel to Japan for up to three weeks, or possibly longer for R&D projects.

Sweden and Japan both have cultures with long histories in steelmaking. By sending Ovako employees to Sanyo Special Steel, they’ll learn first-hand how our Japanese colleagues run operations. And by going in pairs, they’ll be able to discuss and reflect on

Supporting Masters students’ research -
Sweden Japan Foundation

A final initiative is our plan to recruit students to study for Masters qualifications in Japan during 2023. We've secured funding and assistance from the Sweden Japan Foundation,

which develops cultural exchange between the two countries.

As a subsidiary of Sanyo Special Steel and a member of the Nippon Steel Corporation, we are a good fit for the Foundation. Supporting students will help us develop deeper ties with Japan now that the world is overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ll be attending fairs in early 2023 with the goal of attracting applications from students.
