Partnering for sustainability

The drive for sustainability is something that no organisation can achieve alone. That is why we work in partnership with customers, suppliers and regulators to develop a more sustainable approach to industry.

Shared goals, mutual trust, complementary skills and good communication are important characteristics of a successful partnership. Whether we are working to develop a new generation of products or to cut emissions out of production, we bring a passion for sustainability, deep expertise in steel, and a longstanding commitment to innovation and quality.

Polestar 0: a climate-neutral car by 2030

Our most recent partnership is with Polestar, which in September announced that it has recruited Ovako as one of multiple partner companies on its Polestar 0 project. The goal is to produce a climate-neutral car by 2030, eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions from every aspect of vehicle production.

We are working with Polestar and other partners (image from press conference in September 14) that are driving emissions out of materials, car functions and the supply chain. Our contribution will focus on maximizing the reduction of steel’s carbon footprint from upstream effects from alloying content. We will also increase reuse of waste produced during steelmaking and therefore reduce the need to source virgin raw materials.

Net Zero bearing milestone with SKF

Meantime, our long-term partnership with bearing manufacturer SKF is bearing fruit. SKF has used steel from our Hofors mill to produce a Spherical Roller Bearing (SRB) with 90% less emissions than a standard SRB.
The bearing is produced at SKF’s factory in Gothenburg, which is the third of its factories to achieve Net Zero. Ovako’s achievement of carbon neutral production in January 2022 is an important element that is helpful as SKF aims to achieve Net Zero across all its sites and supply chain by 2030.

Marcus Hedblom,President and CEO of Ovako and Rickard Gustafson, President and CEO of SKF

To highlight the collaboration, SKF has supplied the first of the low-carbon SRBs to us for installation in a crane at our Hofors mill.
Rickard Gustafson, President and CEO of SKF, says: “Ovako and SKF have a long history together and this is yet another tangible example of how we are working towards more circular industrial development.”
